VERY Rough Draft of My Storify

17 comments:

  1. Hi Travis - I think you are off to a great start on your Storify.

I know the "analysis" portion is still under construction - and that's where I have been getting the most feedback from my commenters. Something that I would suggest considering is a discussion on how you are going to use the information from this class in your current role at Marist.

I know you are very active on social media around the promotion & sharing of information about Marist Athletics. How are you planning to change your strategy based on what you learned over this course? OR (and something I think may be very important) are you planning on imparting some of this information - especially around security / privacy and job-hunting - to some of our student athletes?

Perhaps a seminar designed specifically for athletes, focusing in on the opportunities and challenges they might face, on when to (and when not to) use social media.

Just a thought on what could really make this Storify pop!

    1. Hi Adrienne,

I think you offer a great suggestion! Knowing how this class will transform Travis and his social media use would provide a clear understanding of how the class has provided valuable information.

Great idea about the seminar on "what to, and not to say" for athletes!

    2. Adrienne & Dawn,

I think those are great suggestions. Using the information that we have been covering over the past seven weeks will definitely be helpful in my current role at Marist. Something that we do not do a great job with is tracking Google analytics and understanding who our audience is. In order to engage the audience, you have to understand who they are.

Privacy and job hunting are two major items that would be beneficial to our student-athletes. Social media can be a powerful tool for them if used effectively. Providing a seminar to how to effectively use social media is a great idea.

      Thanks for your feedback!

  2. Hi Travis,

I think you have done a tremendous job on the content for your background, introduction, and activities portions of the paper by hitting on all of the required content. You have incorporated captures from Google+, Twitter, iLearn, as well as photos relating to your job and your qualifications as a trusted and knowledgeable blog author.

How did you incorporate Facebook and Pinterest into your blog strategies? And having used most of the social media platforms in your daily job activities before taking this class, how did your use of these platforms change or improve from taking this class?

As I know you are working on the Plans and Policies, Analysis, and Conclusion portions of the paper, I am certain they will be very detailed and content filled, based upon your current outline.

    Excellent job Travis!

    1. Hi Travis - As I was reading through the other comments - I had a secondary thought for your analysis section. I know we were required to use Twitter and Pinterest to promote our blogs. Do you think that, given your Marist Athletics audience (younger students - college & high school) those were the right platforms?

Do you think sites that tend to sway a little younger - such as Tumblr or Instagram would be more helpful going forward?

    2. Dawn & Adrienne,

Thanks for your feedback! I agree that I need to incorporate Facebook and Pinterest. I don't see a high use of Pinterest amongst our students. Instagram is our fastest growing social media platform. I would have liked to see us do more with Instagram during this class. I have not used Pinterest at all before this class, but I do see its value.

I have not used Tumblr, so I'm not sure if it would be a good tool or not. Another social media platform that is used a lot amongst our students in Vine. Thanks for your comments, and I will integrate some of our social media strategies and tactics into my paper.

  3. Travis,
Great start. I really like the images, it allows the reader to connect to you as well as highlighting your hobbies and interests. Like, I've noted to Dawn, I am a visual person and my suggestion might be your introduction has great content but maybe breaking it up into smaller blocks of text with space between them. Not sure how it will be, but maybe give it a try.

I like your progression and integration of tweets and iLearn platforms and your narration for your reason for utilizing that platform; it really tells your story. I look forward to reading the conclusion of your story.
    Thank you,
    Joanna

  4. Hi Travis.

Good start, I believe. I think you might benefit from citing other aspects of your social media promotion. I know Dawn mentioned a Google+ post but I don't see that here. How about Pinterest? Since we had this variety of platforms, I think it would be well-received if you include each of them (as opposed to multiples from one source).

I agree with Joanna's comment about your introduction as well, which is something I have to do also.

    1. Mike,

Thanks for the feedback! I plan on incorporating Pinterest as well. I am also going to break up my introduction and probably will even trim it.

  5. Hi Travis,

You Storify is definitely attractive, and chock full of information, which is a good thing. I think Joanna touched upon a key point about the large chunk of text in your Introduction. Maybe you could break it up by spreading your photos within that text block, instead of having them both after the full intro.

Also, in your conclusion you show examples of what you have done in the past with social media. Perhaps you could explain what you will do differently, knowing now what you learned from this course. Also, did you notice anything specific that led more readers to your blog, such as your use of Google+ vs. Twitter vs. Pinterest vs. Facebook. In your analysis section, you may want to include something discussing these comparisons, or something similar.

    Fantastic job Travis!

  6. Hi Travis,

I agree with Michael, you may benefit from siting your use and incorporation of other social media accounts, especially Pinterest because that was one of the three social media platforms that we had to make an account with.

You seemed to have transferred your Storifiy account onto your blog seamlessly. Great job. I especially like how you have your Instagram photos scrolling along at the bottom of the page. I almost didn't notice this, but when I scrolled down I saw how you incorporated this. Very cool!

I think your introduction is strong, and you use of personal photos makes it more interesting and appealing to the eye. Like Joanna said, try breaking it up into smaller blocks of text.

  7. Hey Travis, this is a great start. I like the introduction, but I think you can shorten it up a bit. If you don't want to remove anything, I would add a line break before you start the sentence, "After deciding that I wanted to focus more on marketing…"

I like that you showcased your tweets, but I think you could add value if you incorporated hashtags that related to the blog post. Also, you might want to consider using a link shortener like bit.ly. This gives you more characters for tweeting, and you can track where people are clicking from (Twitter, Facebook, etc).

Overall, great job. I look forward to seeing your final draft.

  8. Hey Travis,

I think you are off to a wonderful start! I particularly think the inclusion of photos of you as well as a video add greatly to the presentation. With so much text the graphics catch you eyes and keep you very engaged.

    Well done!

  9. Travis,

Great intro, you described the reason for the story and immediately put it into context for the rest of the paper. I also really liked that as you mentioned your first blog post you also provided photos and links to that blog. It made it very easy to jump back to the sections you were talking about. You also included information on when you were the doing the digital leadership experience. This was interesting because it gave insight into why your work was different that week from other students.

I would have liked to see more of a breakdown from week to week in your analysis. That way you could have discussed which weeks you felt you did well and which ones you could have improved your social media use or other ways you drove viewers to the site. On another note I really liked what you posted about your work with Marist athletics. Do you feel that including this in all of you posts is a good draw to get people to view other blog entries as well?

    Great Post!
